Islam – The great challenge

A well-attended seminar on Islam showed the great interest in understandable guidance and sound answers. It involves more than collecting objections: we want to understand people and bear witness to Christ.

Looking back · September 2–4, 2016

Read sources carefully, name differences clearly, encounter people respectfully. These three tasks belong together in Christian-Muslim conversation.

A weekend of great interest

Our seminar on Islam took place September 2–4, 2016. Attendance was encouragingly high; on Saturday in particular, the atrium was filled to capacity. The interest encouraged us to address visitors’ questions thoroughly.

Dündar Karahamza was able to attend despite an earlier illness. He introduced Islam and recounted his journey to Christian faith. His personal account moved the guests. I was especially pleased by feedback that our contributions had complemented each other well.

My focus was engagement with Islamic sources. Questions treated included the understanding of God, presentation of Christian beliefs, and the Quran’s relationship to earlier Scriptures and its own transmission.

What careful criticism requires

Such subjects require precise evidence. An individual Quranic verse should be read in context; Quranic text, hadith, and later interpretation must be distinguished. A pointed assertion about ‘Islam’ can otherwise conceal more than it explains.

This concerns Surah 5:116, for example: the verse names Jesus and Mary as objects of rejected worship alongside God. It does not yet explicitly say that it defines the Christian Trinity. Similarly, talk of God’s counterplan in Surah 3:54 must not be extended without further justification into a blanket assertion of the unreliability of all Islamic revelation.

Statements about textual transmission likewise require specific sources and clear explanation of what they establish. Variant readings, reports of collection, and claims about lost texts are not automatically the same thing.

Communicate the gospel understandably

Sunday concerned presenting the gospel to Muslim listeners and avoiding unnecessary offense. Respect does not mean concealing differences about Jesus, the cross, and redemption. It means expressing those differences understandably and without contempt.

We want to explain that forgiveness in Christ is God’s gift, not purchased through a record of religious performance (Ephesians 2:8–10). At the same time, we want to hear the questions and ideas each individual conversation partner actually brings.

A conversation succeeds when truth becomes clearer and the other person better understood.

Historical report on the 2016 seminar with further contextual discussion. Primary texts for the examples named: Surah 5:116; Surah 3:54. Christian standard for conversation: 1 Peter 3:15–16; Colossians 4:5–6.
